Subject: Douglas George Middleton
Date: 1 Jul 1920
Photographer: Unknown
Found: Browns Bay Market, Auckland, NZ
Not a very clear photo of his face but better than nothing. The back of the photo says it all, all that I know anyway. As he was born after the NZBMD website current cut-off date of 1915 I don’t know who his parents were yet. According to this newspaper report he was (along with his mother) a member of the Open Brethren religion and became a ‘conscientious objector’ during WWII.
Despite his poor health Douglas lived to the age of 76, he passed away on 14 Jun 1996. As far as I can see he never married, there doesn’t seem to be anyone else living at the same address in any of the electoral rolls. I did come across another Douglas George Middleton who was listed in the WWII ballot papers but he was a plumber and lived in Woodville whereas this Douglas was a salesman and lived in Wellington.
