It was most probably from a deceased estate as I wouldn’t have thought a family member would give it away. Photographer is R E Bell of Ngaruawahia, New Zealand. Because the photo is framed I couldn’t get a very good copy of it, it wouldn’t scan and the photos all show reflections in the glass, this was the best I could do.</p> <p align="justify">It seems the BOUSIE surname is not common in New Zealand and the first <a href="https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search"><strong>registered births</strong></a> of that name are the children of John & Annie (upto 1922 only). </p> <p><em><strong>1917/19737 <br />Bousie,  Eleanor, Mother: Annie,  Father: John. <br /></strong></em></p> <p><em><strong>1919/14329 <br />Bousie,  Bruce Henry, Mother: Annie, Father: John.</strong></em></p> <p>The names on the back are:-</p> <p>John and Annie <strong>Bousie</strong> (née Henry)</p> <p>Annie Henry’s parents: William & Annie <strong>Henry</strong> (née Cheyne)</p> <p>Annie Cheyne’s parents: John & Ellen <strong>Cheyne</strong> (née Henry)</p> <p>==========================================================================================</p> <p>If anyone connected to this family is interested in this photograph I’d be delighted to send it to you, please contact me at:-</p> <p><strong><font color="#9b00d3" size="4" face="Lucida Handwriting">Dawn Scotting</font> <br />pandora[at]kc.net.nz</strong></p>courtneycotton01@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13800100799965404408noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730691410474101250.post-29378409728100275132018-02-19T16:29:00.001+13:002018-02-19T16:38:37.951+13:00The KERSHAW Family<p align="justify">Today’s photo was sent to me a few years ago but until recently I had forgotten about it. I wasn’t sure, from the few details on the back, that I would be able to find out about this family but it turned out to be relatively easy. It’s a shame the photo is not in good condition.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PoMKB6N8s9A/WopEluWufLI/AAAAAAAANqs/gmLLBfdjV4wtmaEUspFyygVKAg6D-g4_gCHMYCw/s1600-h/kershaw-family%255B6%255D"><img title="kershaw-family" style="display: inline; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="kershaw-family" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xnJLtLpPh1k/WopEmgVsT3I/AAAAAAAANqw/sP5lzeMI78Q7z3jPT7_pxDW_j08m87yLgCHMYCw/kershaw-family_thumb%255B4%255D?imgmax=800" width="604" height="404" /></a></p> <p align="justify"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nSBHiLxwRBM/WopEnp9_rXI/AAAAAAAANq0/WyU_b6CogtQd_iHn0i16DC1WQ8-K-MBRwCHMYCw/s1600-h/kershaw-back%255B3%255D"><img title="kershaw-back" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="kershaw-back" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-mDiVdmYDIHc/WopEoazMpfI/AAAAAAAANq4/u8Ti107dMxUk3z4p0N3GHSlAh7v-EArUACHMYCw/kershaw-back_thumb%255B1%255D?imgmax=800" width="404" height="172" /></a></p> <p align="justify">There were too many <strong>Kershaw</strong> birth registrations to be absolutely sure which ones were Janet, Mary & Florence so I looked for a Kershaw family in the 1901 census with three daughters of the same names and here we have them:-</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-kFHH7vb4tQs/WopEpGsQV2I/AAAAAAAANq8/fb0fJi6c28kuWHyX8TMYcFDMIRlZG6QEgCHMYCw/s1600-h/1901-census%255B7%255D"><img title="1901-census" style="display: inline; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="1901-census" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBrM_rYxJn-qnjEKt7Q5jg-xRi63CTFX4gbb27mMnI-nAmvdo0eTD83E5fEUPAlpKkjbe1d8DNoxD0EgSdi7vy5QbGlsgl8RucG6Jod2xdADNiux3KFXkG6EmhD9Ows3G23FLoyawYVzg/?imgmax=800" width="604" height="115" /></a></p> <p align="justify">Father David was an Overlooker in the Cotton Mill and both he & his wife Margaret had been born in Scotland. Daughters Janet (eldest) born in Manchester, Florence & Mary (youngest) were both born in Rawtenstall. Also living with them was David’s brother Alexander <strong>Kershaw</strong> aged 22 born in Manchester.</p> <p align="justify">On further investigation I found this family in a few trees on ancestry and was able to ascertain the following:-</p> <p align="justify">David <strong>Kershaw</strong> married Margaret Cowan Brown <strong>McGregor</strong> on 18 May 1892 in Glasgow, from other information on the marriage certificate they were first cousins, David aged 22 a bachelor and Margaret 31 a spinster. Their mothers were <strong>McGregor</strong> sisters Agnes & Jane, Margaret was illegitimate and that’s why she had the <strong>McGregor</strong> surname.</p> <p align="justify">To make sure I had the right family I checked the <a href="https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp"><strong>GRO website</strong></a> for the birth registrations of the three girls which also gives their mother’s maiden name:-</p> <p align="justify"><em><font color="#0000ff">1893 4qtr Prestwich – Janet Thompson Kershaw – McGregor <br /> 1897 2qtr Haslingden - Florence Nightingale Kershaw – McGregor <br /> 1900 1qtr Haslingden - Mary Kershaw – McGregor</font></em> <br /></p> <p align="justify">Then very suddenly disaster struck, father David died and was buried on the 29 Sep 1903 aged 35. Janet died in 1906 aged 13, Florence died in 1910 also aged 13.</p> <p align="justify"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P9e-WrH-RXQ/WopGuSFhzmI/AAAAAAAANrs/-IF8aAwcXC4eyvO17gcJNzY8ClHb3lYuQCHMYCw/s1600-h/dk-death%255B3%255D"><img title="dk-death" style="margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto; float: none; display: block; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="dk-death" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-J0aBdqTfee4/WopGvL9PJGI/AAAAAAAANrw/JNx6IC9ejLISmmJsjG_LDBSgq4-zMxs2wCHMYCw/dk-death_thumb%255B1%255D?imgmax=800" width="560" height="136" /></a></p> <p><em><strong><font color="#0000ff">KERSHAW, DAVID, 35 <br /> GRO Reference: 1903  S Quarter in PRESTWICH  Volume 08D  Page 224 <br /> KERSHAW, JANET THOMPSON, 13 <br /> GRO Reference: 1906  D Quarter in ALVERSTOKE Volume 02B  Page 366 <br /> KERSHAW, FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE, 13 <br /> GRO Reference: 1910  D Quarter in LANCASTER  Volume 08E  Page 453</font></strong></em></p> <p align="justify">In the 1911 census mother Margaret was a patient in the Homeopathic Cottage Hospital in Southport, Lancashire, widow aged 50, she is listed as having given birth to three children with only one of them still living. I found daughter Mary aged 11 living with William & Elizabeth Ann <strong>Gill</strong> as their niece, Elizabeth Ann turned out to be the sister of David <strong>Kershaw</strong>. Margaret Cowan Brown <strong>Kershaw</strong> died soon after on the 20 Jul 1912 in Meathop, Westmorland, her address was given as Stanley House, Heysham, Lancashire in the probate of her will.</p> <p align="justify"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-7bZVlkliL3s/WopEqgeCIRI/AAAAAAAANrE/9bls2XqTEqoPW2Apt9YwAhAbApLgYSuDACHMYCw/s1600-h/probate1912%255B3%255D"><img title="probate1912" style="display: inline; background-image: none;" border="0" alt="probate1912" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-m0h2hhzOz3Y/WopErZO5yAI/AAAAAAAANrI/WX9p-OfecSsnnPQxmCpEnt8wk4F26vQ-ACHMYCw/probate1912_thumb%255B1%255D?imgmax=800" width="604" height="151" /></a></p> <p align="justify">So poor little Mary had lost all of her family before she was 12 yrs old. It has now come to my notice that the marriage I found was not them as I’ve been contacted by a member of the family who has wedding photographs of the correct couple who married in 1921 and they are a completely different couple to the above. So now I think that although the above website said the photos were taken in 1921 that it must have been another year and unfortunately there are far too many DRAKE marriages for the 10 years from 1920 to 1929 to try and work out which one it might be as there is no way of knowing which marriages were in Auckland.</p> <p align="justify">I tried Papers Past but didn’t find anything there so it’s back to the drawing board.</p> <p align="justify"><strong>Addendum</strong>: I think I’ve found the right couple after all. I’ve found an Emmanuel Oreti <strong>Drake</strong> and his wife Ivy Maude living at</p> <p align="justify">84 Orakei Rd <br />Remuera</p> <p align="justify">in the 1928 NZ Electoral Rolls, and on relooking at the address on the back I realise now the street name must be Orakei and not Okahu. Emmanuel married Ivy Maude <strong>Metcalfe</strong> in 1919. I’ll add more to this post soon. <br /></p> <blockquote> <p><em><strong><font size="1">References: </font><a href="http://trees.ancestry.com.au/tree/30030957/person/27347138013"><font size="1">ancestry.com.au</font></a></strong></em><em><strong></strong></em><font size="1">; </font><a href="https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/"><font size="1">NZBDM Online</font></a><strong><em></em></strong><font size="1">; </font><a href="http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast"><font size="1">Papers Past</font></a><font size="1">; <a href="http://www.aucklandcity.govt.nz/dbtw-wpd/heritageimages/index.htm">Auckland Council Libraries Heritage Images</a> <a href="http://heritageetal.blogspot.co.nz/2013/07/herman-john-schmidt.html">and Heritage et AL</a>. </font></p> </blockquote> <p>-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------</p> <p align="justify">If anyone recognises the above photos I’d love to hear from you. He didn’t give his surname or the date but going by the address it was sent to I was able to determine it was sent to James Spencer <strong>White</strong>, known as Spen but in this case Uncle Jim. As it was addressed to Uncle Jim at an Army address I presumed it was taken sometime during World War One. So I set about looking at all the children of Uncle Jim’s siblings and it seems like William James <strong>Ward</strong> might be the right one.</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-zIMBHW72vKo/WB67C1nEBDI/AAAAAAAANeI/zLmG7Ekhvts/s1600-h/willie%25255B1%25255D.jpg"><img title="willie" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="willie" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AlvphZ8FHa8/WB67DVgR6dI/AAAAAAAANeM/e91Gpbe5zrI/willie_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="404" height="653" /></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-lOuQU606fk4/WB67EEihc7I/AAAAAAAANeQ/etOTooVbOvE/s1600-h/willie-back%25255B1%25255D.jpg"><img title="willie-back" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; float: none; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin-left: auto; border-left: 0px; display: block; padding-right: 0px; margin-right: auto" border="0" alt="willie-back" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-U59af1rixBo/WB67En_3agI/AAAAAAAANeU/v8QNCD4w4GQ/willie-back_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="404" height="222" /></a></p> <p align="justify">Spen <strong>White</strong> had an older sister, Mary <strong>White</strong> born 1883. I puzzled for awhile as to their connection with Spen White but in due course I found that one of the sister’s of Spen’s wife’s mother, Esther Elizabeth <strong>Chuck</strong>,  had married James <strong>Williams</strong>. Also in the album was a lovely family group photo with James in it although there are no names on that photo, it seems to me it was taken on the same day and in front of the same tree, as was the photo of Victor <strong>Williams</strong>, although Victor doesn’t seem to be in any of the other photos, of which there are a few, all taken on the same day (see below for more photos).</p> <p align="justify">Originally I had thought one of the families belonged to James and I puzzled over these few photos for weeks, in the end I made contact with Lynn who kindly sent me another photo of one of the families and she knew who they were, in the end it seems the rest of James <strong>Williams</strong>’ family was not there that day.</p> <p align="justify">I haven’t been able to ascertain where James <strong>Williams</strong> was born, it was about 1841 (if it was in NZ there is no birth registration for him) and the first sighting of him is when he married Alice Jane <strong>Chuck</strong> in 1893, Alice was 26 and James 52 so he may have been married before. </p> <p align="justify">In 1896 they were living in Palmerston North where James is listed as a ‘collector’. Their eldest son, Victor Cyril James <strong>Williams</strong> was born there on 3 Sep 1894. Sometime before 1897 the family moved to Hastings where on the 1 Jan 1898 the building James had his Herbalist business in was burnt to the ground.</p> <p align="justify"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-APCrfVsRUCo/WBwIq-tr8uI/AAAAAAAANcs/q8QxCaRNJWw/s1600-h/hastings-fire-newspaper-189%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="hastings-fire-newspaper-189" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; float: left; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 30px 0px 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="hastings-fire-newspaper-189" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AAqN1iww0CE/WBwIrbgewEI/AAAAAAAANcw/BOKiciq6X4I/hastings-fire-newspaper-189_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="345" align="left" height="772" /></a></p> <p align="justify">Their second daughter Nettie was born there in 1897, sadly she died aged 14 days old.</p> <p align="justify">By 1899 they had moved to Dannevirke where their last two children were born, Alva Amelia on 4 Dec 1899 and Wesley Arthur on 26 Jun 1903. </p> <p align="justify">By 1911 they had moved again, this time to Trentham in Upper Hutt, in each electoral roll he was listed as a Herbalist.</p> <p align="justify">With a common name like James Williams it had taken me awhile to track down the right one, luckily his occupation of Herbalist was fairly uncommon so I knew I had the right James when I found that.</p> <p align="justify">The 1919 electoral roll was the last one he was listed in and so after scrolling through all the James Williams deaths on Papers Past after that date I found he had died in 1922 aged 81.</p> <p align="justify"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tDTofKEEUfw/WBwIsDwXNpI/AAAAAAAANc0/CPhwu2qBSOQ/s1600-h/james-williams-death%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="james-williams-death" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="james-williams-death" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YRxSlFqXB6A/WBwIskqcOfI/AAAAAAAANc4/lb21j-I6mUs/james-williams-death_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="247" height="148" /></a></p> <p align="justify">Alice Jane <strong>Williams</strong> died on 30 Jan 1935 in the Wellington Hospital and is buried in the Karori Cemetery in Wellington.</p> <p>--------------------------------------------------</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KS5JZSgkrk0/WBwItPY0TMI/AAAAAAAANc8/HYBEF2iDd9E/s1600-h/williams-kitson-marriage%25255B2%25255D.jpg"><img title="williams-kitson-marriage" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="williams-kitson-marriage" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A6n-mGWjG7o/WBwItrYH0sI/AAAAAAAANdA/OSw5x2Of_30/williams-kitson-marriage_thumb.jpg?imgmax=800" width="244" height="98" /></a></p> <p align="justify">In 1925 son Victor married Alfreda Margaret <strong>Kitson</strong>. George & Emma’s first child was Rita Cornforth born 9 Jan 1899 so these two photos must have been taken sometime before June 1915. Charles was baptised there on the 8 May 1808 in the St Editha Church, his parents were John <strong>Botham</strong> and Sarah neé <strong>Brant</strong> who had been married on 23 Jun 1805 at the St Leonard’s Church in Wollaton, Nottinghamshire, seen in this photo:-</p> <p align="center"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-8H52T2p2amg/V_Cmu1pOL8I/AAAAAAAANaA/xQLILNQTjUo/s1600-h/Wollaton%25255B8%25255D.jpg"><img title="Wollaton" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="Wollaton" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bM7-fTt4SSc/V_CmvhxuCOI/AAAAAAAANaE/jVZkfpKyV_4/Wollaton_thumb%25255B6%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="402" height="309" /></a></p> <p align="justify">Charles’ parents probably had other children but I haven’t researched them, just sticking with his line. Charles seems to have married twice to two women with the same name – Ann <strong>Entwistle</strong>, the first marriage was on the 3 Aug 1828 in the St Mary's Church in Cheadle, Cheshire, the witnesses were Henry & George <strong>Smith</strong>. Charles & Ann had four sons before she died in 1837, just a few months after giving birth to fourth son William, who had been baptised on the 12 Jul 1837 in St Mary’s Church in Stockport, baby William’s death is registered in the first quarter of 1838 in Stockport. Their first three sons were:-</p> <p align="justify">John Cartledge 1830-1913; Henry Brant 1932-1908; Charles Entwistle 1835-1907.</p> <p align="justify">After Ann died Charles married the second Ann <strong>Entwistle</strong> on 24 Sep 1838 in the Manchester Cathedral in Lancashire, he was listed as a widower and she a spinster & a minor, their fathers were: John <strong>Botham</strong> printer & John <strong>Entwistle</strong> labourer. Witnesses: Robert & Elizabeth <strong>Cambe</strong>.</p> <p align="justify">Charles & second wife Ann had one more son whom they also named William, he was baptised on the 6 Jun 1841 in St Mary’s Church, Stockport. Coincidentally that was the same date as the census and their address on both the baptism and census was King St West, Stockport, so we know we have the right family. Sadly this William seems to have died also as I cannot find him in any census after the 1841 when he was aged 3 mths, there is a burial on the 12 Feb 1845 for a 4 year old William <strong>Bothams</strong> recorded in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Edgeley (Cheadle parish) that might be him.</p> <p align="justify">The two eldest sons, John Cartledge & Henry Brant, both emigrated to New Zealand but Charles Entwistle stayed in Cheshire where he married & died in Bramhall. Strangely he was the father of one of my other orphan photographs I found last year of Sarah Ann <strong>Botham</strong>, you can read about her <a href="http://bygonedaysphotography.blogspot.co.nz/2015/06/sarah-ann-botham-1860-1932.html"><font size="3"><strong><em>here</em></strong></font></a>.</p> <p align="justify">Henry Brant <strong>Botham</strong> was living with his future wife, Mary Ann <strong>Entwistle </strong>& her parents in the 1861 census in Stockport, he’s listed as a nephew so he & Mary Ann must have been cousins. They were married on the 3 Oct 1861 in St Mary’s Church in Cheadle and in 1863 they emigrated to New Zealand where their seven children were born. I haven’t researched this family much as I was going down brother John’s line but I did find these two photos of Henry & John online in a <a href="http://tinyurl.com/z2jskqq">brochure</a> about the Methodist Church in Tuamarina:-</p> <p align="justify"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ipAmcOyYj8g/V_CmwGqOvnI/AAAAAAAANaI/ABQ7THdpsKI/s1600-h/henry-brant-botham%25255B6%25255D.jpg"><img title="henry-brant-botham" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="henry-brant-botham" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-aHomA8Kn26g/V_CmwgeFElI/AAAAAAAANaM/3sjpxjK1smU/henry-brant-botham_thumb%25255B4%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="328" height="437" /></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fpvdvwpATY4/V_CmxbKlA7I/AAAAAAAANaQ/Rsw8Q9hjm3U/s1600-h/john-c-botham%25255B4%25255D.jpg"><img title="john-c-botham" style="border-top: 0px; border-right: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; border-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px" border="0" alt="john-c-botham" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XbepDc_0Ohk/V_Cmx0lqmyI/AAAAAAAANaU/YYMQtWXW8Og/john-c-botham_thumb%25255B2%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="283" height="437" /></a></p> <p align="justify">John Cartledge (or Cartlidge) <strong>Botham</strong> was born on 21 Jan 1830 & baptised in St Mary’s Church, Stockport on the 30 May 1830. He married Martha <strong>Oldham</strong> on 21 Mar 1856 in St Mary’s Church, Cheadle and a few years later they emigrated to NZ according to his obituary which you can read <a href="https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/MEX19130916.2.19.21?query=john%20cartledge%20botham"><strong><em><font size="3">here</font></em></strong></a>.</p> <p align="justify">John Cartledge & Martha had six children (that I’ve found), the eldest being Elizabeth Ann, the mother of James Spencer <strong>White</strong>, second child was Charles the subject of the following two photos and the other children were George, Martha, Caroline & Alice Eva.</p> <p align="justify"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-tSlSnGxuWQA/V_Cmyp0IG2I/AAAAAAAANaY/mxo5ldFxXmA/s1600-h/charles-elizabeth-botham%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="charles-elizabeth-botham" style="border-top: 0px; Inside are many lovely old photos from before and after the turn of the century, unfortunately there are many with no names but some are named so I will attempt to identify as many as I can. The first photo in the album is obviously a family group and luckily I’ve been able to identify the father as being Charles <strong>White</strong> MBE of Onamalutu in Marlborough, New Zealand (There’s a photo of Charles White found in a Temperance Newspaper dated 1916 & reprinted in the book <a href="http://www.marlborough.museums.org.nz/mhs/vewebsite2/exhibit6/e60020a.htm">‘Plum Duff & Cake’</a>). Charles was Spen’s father, possibly he is the one sitting next to his mother Elizabeth Ann neé <strong>Botham</strong>.</p> <p align="justify"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-PdIi5KYCvYE/V-86bBmaqtI/AAAAAAAANYc/0gTOlEuoPco/s1600-h/white-family-19145.jpg"><img title="white-family-1914" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="white-family-1914" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-BXsmZu45EgU/V-86bjHZjNI/AAAAAAAANYg/eu5q--alSf8/white-family-1914_thumb3.jpg?imgmax=800" width="624" height="377" /></a></p> <p align="justify">I originally thought the photo might have been taken about the same time as the date on the album – August 1914 – but on further investigation I found that Elizabeth Ann had died on 2 Apr 1912 aged 52 so it must have been before that date. The young lady on the extreme right standing at the back looks to be quite young, maybe 13 or thereabouts and their youngest daughter, Elizabeth Alice, was born in 1898. Charles & Elizabeth had at least nine sons and five daughters (that I’ve found), they were:-</p> <p align="justify">George 1878-?; John James 1881-1881; Frank Oldham 1882-1924; Charles Botham 1885-1907; William Botham 1890-1924; James Spencer 1891-1971; Albert Henry 1895-1981; Alfred 1897-1897 & Robert 1900-1900. </p> <p align="justify">Ann 1879-1913; Mary 1883-1941; Martha 1887-1935; Caroline Ella 1893-1914; Elizabeth Alice 1898-1984.</p> <p align="justify">The only person I don’t have a death date for is eldest son George so if he isn’t in the photo then it would have been taken before the death of son Charles Botham in 1907, in that case Elizabeth Alice would have been less than 9 years old and she’s definately older than that!</p> <p align="justify">PS Since posting this photo I’ve been contacted by the grand-daughter of Mary (daughter of Charles & Elizabeth Ann White) who told me that Mary is the one sitting on the extreme right. She also told me that her mother said that the older couple in the middle of the photo were the parents of Elizabeth Ann Botham and the rest were their grandchildren, however, that remains to be seen as the grandmother, Martha Botham neé Oldham, died in 1904 and that would make the youngest in the photo (Elizabeth Alice) only aged 5 or 6, she’s definately older than that!</p> <blockquote> <p align="justify"><font size="1"><strong><em>References: </em></strong><a href="http://www.marlborough.museums.org.nz/mhs/vewebsite2/exhibit6/e60020a.htm"><strong><em>Marlborough Museum</em></strong></a><em>; </em><a href="https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/"><em>Papers Past</em></a><em>; </em><a href="https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search"><em>NZBMD Online</em></a></font></p> </blockquote> <p>------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------</p> <p>If you can help identify anyone in this photo please leave a comment including a contact email address. In other trees on ancestry they give a birthdate of 1837 and a death date of 1916 but with no proven sources.</p> <p align="justify">Her elder sister was Emilia Templeton <strong>Clifford</strong>, born 31 Jan 1833, date found in another tree with no proven source, however, her death was registered in the 1qtr of 1898 aged 65 in the RD of Bawnboy in Co Cavan, Ireland. The woman standing in the photo looks to be older than the other one so I’m presuming she is Emilia. Emilia married the Venerable Reverend William <strong>Creek</strong> on 22 Sep 1863 in the Kildallon Church, Co Cavan (see <a href="http://bygonedaysphotography.blogspot.co.nz/2016/06/isabella-ogle-creek-1867-1930.html"><strong>previous article</strong></a> on their daughter Isabella Ogle Creek).</p> <p align="justify">I found the following information on <a href="http://www.bomford.net/IrishBomfords/Chapters/Chapter35/Chapter35.htm#35.6.2 _The_Martin_and_Clifford_Families_"><strong>The Irish Bomfords website here</strong></a>:-</p> <blockquote> <p align="justify"><em><font color="#0000ff">In addition to the Cliffords at Greenville, mention should be made of their cousins of Carn Cottage at the other end of the Parish of Kildallan. Both branches of the Clifford family worshipped at Kildallan Church in which there are a number of Clifford wall memorials and many were buried in the churchyard. Robert Clifford, 1792 - 1855, a Captain of the East India Marine (HEICS), bought Carn Cottage around 1833 and brought up his eight children there, but on his death his wife Mary Jane let the place in 1858. Incidentally the marriage of Captain Robert and Mary Jane in 1825 was an unusual double wedding of two brothers, Robert and Richard Clifford, and two sisters, Mary Jane and Catherine Morgan-Williams. <strong><font color="#9b00d3">General Robert Clifford</font></strong>, 1839 - 1930, Captain Robert’s second son known as ‘Bob’, of the 22nd Sam Browne Cavalry and the 2nd Punjab Cavalry who served during the Indian Mutiny, settled his family of six children at Carn Cottage in 1881, and lived there himself after his retirement in 1894 until he died in 1930. Carn Cottage was sold in 1933 for £l,900 by the General’s son Jack, 1877 - 1970, and is now derelict. And so two generations of Cliffords, the children of Captain Robert and those of General Robert, were brought up at Carn Cottage and a number died there and were buried at Kildallan Church where General Robert’s brother-in-law, Archdeacon <strong><font color="#9b00d3">William Creek</font></strong>, was Rector until he died in 1899. Thus in 1882, when Frederick Bamford arrived at Killashandra, there were five unmarried daughters at Greenville and four at Carn Cottage.</font></em></p> <p align="justify"><em><font color="#0000ff">Like the Martins, these Cliffords were either living in Co Cavan or working in India. Even the sad death of two Cliffords in the Indian Mutiny of 1857 did not deter them from going out to India. The story of these two from the Carn Cottage branch is worth recording. General Bob’s sister, Mary Jane, had gone out to India to keep house for her brother, Wigram Clifford of the Bengal Civil Service, and also, no doubt, to find a husband. When the Mutiny broke out Mary Jane was in Delhi acting as a bridesmaid for the daughter of the Delhi Chaplain. When the mutineers arrived the girls tried to hide under a sofa but were dragged out and murdered. Meanwhile Wigram heard that the mutiny had erupted locally and immediately set out on horseback on the long ride to Gurgaon south of Delhi to warn the garrison there, only to discover that they had got the news on the previous day. He was soon after murdered at Gurgaon together with many loyal soldiers and civilians. Agatha’s father, Richard Henry Clifford, survived the mutiny but only after many escapes; he finally dressed as an Indian and took refuge with the family of one of his loyal servants. General Bob Clifford just missed the Mutiny because the ship taking him to India as a cadet broke down in the Atlantic and was six months under repair on the east coast of South America. When he arrived in Calcutta the Mutiny was over and he learnt of the deaths of Wigram and Mary Jane. An American missionary told him that his sister was known as “the beautiful Miss Clifford” and that Wigram, being in the ICS, had no business to leave his post and join the troops.</font></em></p> </blockquote> <h1><em><font color="#0000ff" size="4"><u>Carn Cottage, Belturbet, Co Cavan, Ireland</u></font></em></h1> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-q9R0uIRk9VI/V67-gn-h19I/AAAAAAAANVs/x-tv69sxP6Q/s1600-h/helen-clifford-back%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="helen-clifford-back" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="helen-clifford-back" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MrpYAfStJC8/V67-hDjAbhI/AAAAAAAANVw/nKid9lmyG68/helen-clifford-back_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="309" height="512" /></a><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-qvnLixOfIHg/V67-h1BS7wI/AAAAAAAANV0/nr0ZWjkFyfw/s1600-h/helen-clifford-named%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="helen-clifford-named" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="helen-clifford-named" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-M-A8d6kJ3m4/V67-iXH8fCI/AAAAAAAANV4/OrWOGETt0F4/helen-clifford-named_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="309" height="523" /></a></p> <p align="justify">The <font color="#9b00d3"><strong><em>General Robert Clifford</em></strong></font><font color="#000000"> mentioned above as ‘Bob’ was the younger brother of Ellen & Emilia and the older brother of William Wigram, his daughter Helen is the subject of this photo which luckily included her address and date the photo was taken on the back. They were the daughters of Robert Adam <strong>Wauchope</strong> and Amelia Henrietta neé <strong>Norman</strong>, both born in Rawul Pindee, Bengal, India, Charlotte on 3 Aug 1866 and Eliza on 10 Aug 1867.</p> <p align="justify">Robert Adam Wauchope is much documented on the Internet so no need for me to go into too much detail, he was born Edinburgh in 1836 and seems to have served in the Army in India for most of his adult life, retiring as Major General at the age of 49, he died in Brighton, Sussex in 1885 aged 62. He & wife Amelia (Amy) had seven children, two of whom died as babies. Charlotte & Eliza were the two eldest.</p> <p align="justify">Charlotte married civil engineer Edmund Batten <strong>Forbes</strong> in 1885 in Kent, England and they had at least six children born in various countries around the world including Chile & Mexico. They must have finally settled in London where Edmund died in 1924 and Charlotte in 1958.</p> <p align="justify">Eliza married Joseph Francis <strong>Studholme</strong> in 1902 in Chelsea London:-</p> <p align="justify"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-WxIPUoifAuA/V1wDLLrS75I/AAAAAAAANNg/XDmuHDgLd-E/s1600-h/wauchope-studholme-marriage%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="wauchope-studholme-marriage" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="wauchope-studholme-marriage" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bi6uslz81Z8/V1wDLkq9quI/AAAAAAAANNo/uNOl8Q5edSg/wauchope-studholme-marriage_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="624" height="180" /></a></p> <p align="justify">Joseph is listed as a New Zealand Sheep Farmer as well as his father John <strong>Studholme</strong>. I found this baptism for Joseph in the Knottingley parish records but I’m not sure whether it says he was born in New Zealand or Yorkshire! His parents abode is given as ‘Christchurch, New Zealand’ but he was born on 10 Mar 1866 and baptised on 22 Apr 1866 which doesn’t compute if you consider the sea voyage from NZ to England in those days would take at least three months! So I’m guessing (again) that his parents had been living in NZ and had journeyed to England for his birth before returning home again:-</p> <p><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1B1V289Woko/V1wDMcSGZYI/AAAAAAAANN0/gpN0wZblApM/s1600-h/studholme-birth%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="studholme-birth" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="studholme-birth" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-51EWbDtLy1U/V1wDM8bWLLI/AAAAAAAANN8/MGHtnJMg7DY/studholme-birth_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="624" height="128" /></a></p> <p align="justify">Joseph & Eliza don’t seem to have had any children, I don’t think they had time as they did a lot of travelling around the world on various ships over the years. Joseph died in London in 1930 and Eliza in Masterton, NZ in 1948.</p>courtneycotton01@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13800100799965404408noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1730691410474101250.post-26004633377206034612016-06-07T14:48:00.001+12:002016-06-12T21:29:19.839+12:00Ellen Home Husband 1847-1936<p align="center"><strong><em><u><font color="#ff0000" size="4">From the Francis <a href="http://bygonedaysphotography.blogspot.co.nz/2016/05/francis-hayter-album.html">Hayter</a> Album</font></u></em></strong></p> <p align="center"><strong><em><u><font color="#ff0000" size="4">Case Study: Ellen Home Husband</font></u></em></strong></p> <p align="left"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-E0Iefj7Fvck/V1Y11iYgmTI/AAAAAAAANMQ/KcDxX1H7Hek/s1600-h/nellie-h-husband-1872%25255B3%25255D.jpg"><img title="nellie-h-husband-1872" style="border-left-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; background-image: none; border-bottom-width: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-left: 0px; display: inline; padding-right: 0px; border-top-width: 0px" border="0" alt="nellie-h-husband-1872" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UTGQLtMSCpY/V1Y12XVNg_I/AAAAAAAANMU/oz7HwIvNovk/nellie-h-husband-1872_thumb%25255B1%25255D.jpg?imgmax=800" width="624" height="438" /></a></p> <p align="justify">What do you think, is this the same woman? The fourth photo was taken in England not Sydney (Australia) like the other three. As Nellie was only 5 years old when she emigrated to Australia it’s not a younger her, she later moved back to England when she was in her 30’s.</p> <p align="justify">-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------</p> <p align="justify">Ellen Home <strong>Husband</strong> was born in Bayswater, London and baptised on 27 Oct 1847 at the Holy Trinity Church in Paddington, daughter of James <strong>Husband</strong> and Caroline Jane neé <strong>Home</strong>. James & Caroline’s other children were:- Thomas 1831-32; Caroline Frances 1832; Cordelia Jane 1835; James Home 1836; Frances Home 1838; Herbert George 1840-41; Emma Jane 1844 and Emily Herbert Matilda 1850.</p> <p align="justify">James Husband originated from Devonshire and their first six children were born in Stoke Damerel, Devon before they moved to London, the three youngest were all born in Bayswater.</p> <p align="justify">On the 24 Dec 1852 Mrs <strong>Husband</strong>, her five daughters and son James, arrived in Port Jackson in NSW, Australia on the General Hewitt. I don’t know when husband James arrived but he was also living in Sydney until his death in 1878. </p> <p align="justify">The photographer of the third photo is Mr Freeman who had by this time taken over Oswald Allen’s studio, in it the woman is wearing rings on her wedding finger so it may not be Nellie because she never married, however, they may just be dress rings.</p> <p align="justify">Nellie was in Australia up until the 1881 census when she is now living back in England, visiting the White family in London, over the next few census she is listed as visiting various people in London & Dorset. On the 19 Apr 1936 she passed away at 18 Campbell Rd, Boscombe, Bournemouth, Dorset. The probate of her will went to the Westminster Bank so she may not have had any family left.</p> <p align="justify">What connection, if any, the <strong>Husband</strong> family have to the <strong>Hayter</strong> family I have absolutely no idea! Although I’ve been told that the <strong>White</strong> family (who Nellie was visiting) are connected to the <strong>Hayter</strong> family, time will tell.</p>courtneycotton01@gmail.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13800100799965404408noreply@blogger.com0
