      • Subject: James Edward Winfield

      • Photographer: J Reese Jones & Co, Gillingham, Kent
      • Found: England

James & Amy seem to be the only children of Richard Edward Winfield (a shoemaker) and Emily Louise Clifford who were married on 15 Nov 1874 at St Nicholas Church in Rochester, Kent. [Richard was the son of John Winfield and Louisa Woolley (married 1827) born c1834 in Chatham, Kent. His mother, Louisa, married William Montague in 1858 after John died in 1849.]

Births Dec 1875
Winfield  Amy Louisa    Medway  2a 474

Births Sep 1879
Winfield  James Edward    Medway  2a 554

The four of them are at home in Gillingham, Kent in 1881, 2 years later father Richard died aged 49. In subsequent census the two children are living with mother Emily, still in Gillingham.

Amy died unmarried in 1953 and as the death date of James isn’t filled in on the back of his photo I presume he died after Amy.

Deaths Jun 1953
Winfield  Amy Louisa   77  Chatham  5b 233

In 1912 James married Elsie Hutchings, nothing further is known about them except that in 1901 James was listed as a Shipwright.

Marriages Sep 1912
Winfield  James E  Hutchings  Medway  2a 1750
Hutchings Elsie J  Winfield  Medway  2a 1750

Mrs M Goodfellow of Ampton, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

I haven’t been having much luck in placing the people in my photographs lately & this latest one is no exception. It’s a postcard photograph with a short letter written on the back.

m-goodfellow m-goodfellow-back

      • Subject: Mrs M Goodfellow of Bury St Edmunds
      • Date: Unknown
      • Photographer: G S Cousins, Bury St Edmunds
      • Found: England

I was unable to find much on the photographer except for this little snippet here:-

Bury Pageant: scenes from a Memorable Folk play - Supplement to Bury and Norwich Post, 9 July 1907; photographs by G S Cousins, official photographer 1907 (HD2733).

Which tells me he was in business at least in 1907. I then searched on FreeBMD for a marriage between a Goodfellow and a lady with a name starting with M in or near the area of Bury St Edmunds, this is what I found:-

Marriages Jun 1908
GOODFELLOW  Henry William    Bury St. E.  4a 1536
LONG  May Florience     Bury St. E.  4a 1536

Searching in the various census led me to this birth & the marriage of her parents:-

Births Dec 1880
LONG  Florence May     Bury St. E.  4a 575

Marriages Dec 1867
DOUEL  Eliza     Bury St. E  4a 1013
LONG  William James     Bury St. E.  4a 1013

Florence was listed as May in all the census so had obviously switched her names around by the time she was married.

Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 1844; Folio: 69; Page: 3; Line:  ; GSU roll: 1341446.
1881 Census

Eliza wife mar 32 born Maldon, Essex
Lizzie dau 13 scholar born Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk
Annie dau 11 scholar born ditto
William son 9 scholar born ditto
Agnes dau 6 scholar born ditto
Cecil son 4 born ditto
Alice dau 2 born ditto
May dau 3mths born ditto
William father mar 55 grocer's asst born Colchester, Essex
Hannah mother mar 64 midwife born Haughley, Suffolk

I was able to find her in 1891 still at home, in 1901 working as a servant in London but strangely had no luck finding her as a married woman in the 1911 census.

Finding all of this is no proof that May Florence Long is the person in the photo though. If May is in your family tree maybe you can identify her for me.

Mrs Casalis & Family 1891

 mrs-casalis mrs-casalis-back

      • Subject: Mrs Casalis & children
      • Date: 1891
      • Photographer: Osborne Morley, East London, South Africa
      • Found: England

I’m afraid just who Mrs Casalis is has escaped me so far! The only Casalis entries on FreeBMD are two marriages, one of which looked promising to start with:-

Marriages Sep 1932
Casalis  Maurice P E A  Northampton  3b 96
Mary M Timpson  Northampton  3b 96

The following year it seems that they may have left England to go back to South Africa:-

Name: Rev Maurice CASALIS
Date of departure: 10 March 1933
Port of departure: Southampton
Passenger destination port: Cape, South Africa
Passenger destination: Cape, South Africa
Ship: CARNARVON CASTLE
Date of Birth: 1876 (calculated from age)
Age: 57
Marital status:
Sex: Male
Occupation: Clergyman

The Rev Maurice is about the right age to be the young boy in the photo, but who knows?

From another source I found this:-

CASALIS, "Maurice" Jules  Gender: male
Birth: 1875
Death: after 1947
Occupation: Pasteur consacré le 13/08/1901

It seems Maurice may be descended from, or at least connected to, the French Protestant missionary, Eugene Casalis, who emigrated to South Africa soon after he was ordained at the age of 19. He dedicated his life to the Basuto people and has written a book titled My Life In Basuto Land (1889).

Finally a little bit of information about the photographer from Knowledge4Africa:-

Osborne Morley was born in New Holland (Yorkshire) in August 1850. He emigrated to the Cape Colony where he established a photographic business in King William's Town, then moved to East London where he established a similar concern in January 1883. He lived in East London for about 30 years and became a trustee of the Wesleyan Church and joined the Free Masons' Buffalo Lodge. He became a Town Councillor in September 1885, representing Ward 3 and was re-elected in February 1886. He did not seek another term after his retirement on rotation in February 1889. Morley eventually moved to Johannesburg where he died on 21 July 1926, at the age of 76.

I found an excellent source for the de Casalis family tree on WorldConnect here but after reading much of it I still don’t really know just who the three people in the photo are. If anyone knows anything about or is connected to the Casalis family please do contact me, I would love to hear from you & I would love the photo to go to a good home.

Agnes Paxton Brown 1895-?

      • Subject: Agnes Paxton Brown
      • Date: 1895 or 1896
      • Photographer: F. Elderfield, Farnham, Surrey
      • Found: England

This gorgeous little girl is the daughter of William Brown & Margaret Emily nee Parfitt. Her birth was registered in the 4qtr of 1895 so it seems the date on the photo should be 1896.

Births Dec 1895
Brown  Agnes Paxton    Alton  2c 165

This looks like it might be the marriage of her parents:-

Marriages Dec 1894
BROWN  William    Portsea  2b 1065
Parfitt  Margaret Emily     Portsea  2b 1065

In the 1911 census she is listed under her full name, living in Petersfield, Hampshire with her parents and five siblings. In 1901 they are living at Marsh Farm in Steep, Hampshire, her father was a Farm Bailiff born in Scotland as was his wife Margaret. All of their children were born in Bentley, Hampshire, they are:-

Annie Carlow; Janet Wilhelmina; William Donald; John Andrew and Wallace.

That’s all I’ve been able to find out about Agnes. If anyone knows anything about or is connected to the Brown family please do contact me, I would love to hear from you & it may be to your advantage. All the information on this family may also be seen on WorldConnect here when it is next updated.

Walter William John Ewins 1881-?

wwj-ewins-400

      • Subject: Walter William John Ewins
      • Date: 7 Mar 1907
      • Photographer: Pincock Bros, 48 Park Row, Bristol
      • Found: England

Although this young man has a name that stands out from the crowd I haven’t been able to find out much about him at all.

His birth is registered in 1881 and his marriage in 1911:-

Births Sep 1881
Ewins  Walter William J     Birmingham  6d 165

Marriages Sep 1911
Ewins  Walter W J     Westminster  1a 1331
MITCHELL  Ethel G     Westminster  1a 1331

The only census I’ve been able to find him in with any certainty that it is him is the 1911 census. In the two previous census he is not listed with his full name, not that I can find.

1911
HOUSEHOLD EWINS WALTER WILLIAM JOHN M 1882 29 Fulham London (born Birmingham)

The photograph is a postcard published by Pincock Bros so they may not necessarily be the photographer.
