      • Subject: John William Anderson
      • Address: School House, Owanyilla, Queensland
      • Date: May 1891
      • Found: England

Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find out anything about John (or Jonathan) Wm Anderson at all! The Queensland Historical Records have so many John William or William John Andersons listed that it would be impossible to say which one is him, if indeed any of them are.

On the back of the photo it also says ‘For Father’ and as this photo turned up in England I’m presuming John Wm migrated from the UK somewhere and was sending the photo back to his father.

The parents’ names listed on the Death entries turns up nothing on the IGI either.

Alice Pleace – 1869-1876

        • Subject: Alice Pleace
        • Date: c1871
        • Photographer: Andrew Chandler, 419 George St, Sydney

There won’t be any descendants for this cute little girl but maybe there’s a family member out there who would love to have it.

Henry Pleace was born about 1828 in a place unknown, the first place I found him was in Sydney (Australia) when he married Alice Kippin in 1866.

445/1866  PLEACE  HENRY  KIPPIN  ALICE  SYDNEY

Henry & Alice had three daughters born in Sydney, none of whom survived to adulthood:-

NSW Births
1039/1867  PLEACE  ELIZABETH C  HENRY  ALICE  SYDNEY
663/1869  PLEACE  ALICE  HENRY  ALICE  SYDNEY
1654/1871  PLEACE  EDITH  HENRY  ALICE  SYDNEY

NSW Deaths
2073/1867  PLEACE  ELIZABETH C  HENRY  ALICE  SYDNEY
1304/1871  PLEACE  EDITH  HENRY  ALICE  SYDNEY
201/1876  PLEACE  ALICE  HENRY  ALICE  SYDNEY

I’ve been unable to find where Henry came from but Alice may be this one born in 1844 in Surrey, England, going by her parents names listed on her death registration:-

7599/1900  PLEACE  ALICE  WILLIAM  ELIZABETH  SYDNEY

Alice Kippin
Christening:  09 JUN 1844   St Johns, Clapham, Surrey, England
Father:  William Kippin
Mother:  Elizabeth

But without an age at death it’s hard to say for sure. Henry’s death registration gives his age but not his parents’ names:-

1319/1882  PLEACE  HENRY  AGE 54 YEARS  DIED SYDNEY

The following children are all for a William & Elizabeth Kippen but there is a 21 year gap between the youngest and Alice so either she was baptised many years after she was born or she doesn’t belong to this William & Elizabeth:-

JAMES THOMAS KIPPEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 08 APR 1810 Mitcham, Surrey, England
JOHN KIPPEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 06 AUG 1815 Mitcham, Surrey, England
JABEZ KIPPEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 29 DEC 1816 Mitcham, Surrey, England
HENRY KIPPEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 04 FEB 1821 Mitcham, Surrey, England
WILLIAM EDMUND KIPPEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 22 SEP 1822 Mitcham, Surrey, England
MARIA ELIZABETH KIPPEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 28 DEC 1823 Mitcham, Surrey, England

In the 1851 census in England there is an Alice Kippin born in Mitcham which seems to suggest she is the sister of the above lot but she is aged 20 so IF the above baptism is her she was 14 when she was baptised.

1851 Census
Delamere Cottages, 24 Park Cres, Lambeth, Surrey
Alice Kippin serv unm 20 born Mitcham, Surrey

She also could be the daughter of this William & Elizabeth who were married in Wiltshire in 1846, no children on the IGI for them though:-

Abel followed in his father’s footsteps and became a miner in the coal mines. He was still living at home with his parents and older brother, James, in 1851 but by 1861 he had left home and we find him lodging in Dudley, Worcestershire, miner aged 26 and unmarried.

By 1871 he had made his way to Australia where he married Mary Ann Newcombe in Hobart, Tasmania. They had two children, George William 1873 and Charles Stansell 1875:-

        • Date: 6 Jun 1884

        • Found: UK

William Norton Hill was born in Bristol in 1861.

Births Jun 1861
HILL  William Norton    Bristol  6a 69

Back then Bristol was variously referred to as being in Somerset or Gloucestershire so the county boundaries have changed over the years. William was the son of Henry Hill and Maria née Reynolds who also had two other children – Henry Reynolds 1859-1871 and Emma Maria 1862-1871.

Marriages Sep 1857
Hill  Henry    Isle of Wight  2b 691
Reynolds  Maria     Isle of Wight  2b 691

Henry & Maria lived in Bristol all their lives, Henry was a Printer employing quite a few men & boys in most census, they died 1883 & 1885 respectively.

Deaths Mar 1883
HILL  Maria  64  Bristol  6a 13

Deaths Dec 1885
Hill  Henry  74  Bristol  6a 31

In 1898 William married Florence Mary Marsh in Bristol where they had at least four children – Henry Reynolds 1900, Dorothy Grace 1903, Thomas Norton 1906 and Emily Joyce 1907.

Marriages Sep 1898
Hill  William Norton    Bristol  6a 119
Marsh  Florence Mary     Bristol  6a 119

William followed in his father’s footsteps with his occupation being Printer & Stationer in the census.

Deaths Mar 1929
Hill  William N  67  Bristol  6a 345

Deaths Dec 1931
Hill  Florence M  52  Bristol  6a 204

Son Henry Reynolds is not at home in the 1911 census and although they say that their 4 children are all still alive, I can’t find him anywhere, nor can I find a marriage or death for him in FreeBMD. Daughter Dorothy may have married in 1929 and Emily in 1935 although I’m not 100% certain about them.

Mrs Parker of Post Office Creek

Somewhere in the middle of this map is or was a place called ‘Post Office Creek’. Dunedin is off to the right of the map.

The Waipori Goldfield was discovered in December, 1861, when gold was found on the Yerterburn, afterwards named the Post Office Creek. It developed into a rich and important alluvial field. The Waipori Valley is about twelve miles in length, and has an average width of half a mile.

THE TRAQUAIR HUNDRED AGAIN.
Tuapeka Times, Volume III, Issue 218, 4 April 1872, Page 3
This Hundred, which has been the cause of so much litigation and legislation, has again obtruded itself on public notice. The Post Office Creek diggings, it appears, which were formerly a portion of the Tuapeka Goldfield, have been included in the boundaries of this hundred. This was not known to the parties working there till recently, when an application was made to buy land contiguous to the workings. On the Post Office Creek there are about twenty Europeans and sixty Chinaman engaged in mining. About twenty- five miles of races have been cut, and including these races and dams, &c, there is mining property to the extent of £4000 or £5000 in value, at a low estimate. The selling of land on this diggings would necessarily impede mining operations, if it would not cause their suspension altogether, thereby causing great pecuniary loss, besides throwing a number of men out of employment, and locking up a large area of auriferous land. A deputation from the miners of the Creek, accompanied by Mr. Cable, waited upon the Waste Land Hoard on Wednesday, the 27th ult., and represented the matter. The deputation were requested to put in a written statement. The miners propose that the boundaries of the hundred should be shifted back to the top of the dividing range. "Were that done, it would give them ample room. We are informed that the matter is to be placed in the hands of the Waipori Mining Association. We have little doubt but that on the matter being properly represented, the Waste Land Board will see their way to acceding to the wishes of the miners.

By now you’ll be wondering what this is all about! This photograph is what put me onto the search for a place called ‘Post Office Creek’ probably somewhere near Dunedin:-

mrs-parker

After searching many many more newspapers than the ones above I came to the conclusion that I was probably looking for a J R Parker. On searching the NZ BMDs I found two getting married around the right time frame:-

1898/845 Margaret Josephine  McDevitt  James Robert  Parker
1909/4730 Annie  Thomson  James Rollo  Parker

After a bit more Googling I discounted James Rollo after finding mention of him being in Gisborne (in North Island, Dunedin being in the South Island). More Googling and I suddenly hit the jackpot in one of the forums on ancestry.com:-

Hi ya, looking for any info on the descendents or ancestors of this couple my great grandparents.
Margaret was born 1872 in Alexandra, her parents listed on marriage license as James McDevitt and Annie nee Madden? James Robert was born 1865 in Dunedin, married Margaret in 1898. His parents listed as James Parker and Annie nee Sullivan?

With fingers crossed the message wasn’t too old I posted a reply to Chrissy asking her if her ancestors have ever been in Post Office Creek and this morning the answer came back:-

“Yes they were definately at Post Office Creek Waipori. Also James father who was also James Parker and his wife Annie nee Sullivan. I dont have any pics of either of them.”

We don’t as yet know just which Mrs Parker she might be, and sadly may never know, but I leave that up to Chrissy now. This time I’m thrilled to have found a descendant before I posted my article!

Mr MacCorhan or McCrohan of Melbourne

Without a first name I knew I wouldn’t be able to identify Mr MacCorhan but someone just may recognise him.

I looked in the Victorian Historical Index of BMDs and found only one entry of a McCorhan but after doing a little research in Google I think that perhaps the name should be McCrohan. On rechecking the index I found 141 entries for McCrohan.

There is a website for the McCrohan name worldwide and I did find some McCrohan photographs including a house in Melbourne built by Eugene McCrohan and also a family photo but it’s hard to say if this gentleman belongs to that family or not, I certainly couldn’t identify him being in the family photo.

Foster & Martin photographers seem to have been active in Melbourne from 1877 to about 1900.

Alma May Lee Brody or Broily or ???

alma-may-lee

alma-may-lee-back

This time I’d like to enlist your help – what do you think Alma’s surname is?

I thought it was BRODY, other people have come up with BROILY or BROELY or BROOLY – whatever it is there is no Alma May Lee under any spelling I can think of in the NZ BMDs. Which leads me to believe that either she was born after 1909 (the cutoff date for searching the NZ records online) OR the photograph was posted to someone in NZ (found in South Island) from another country. I also search the marriages & deaths, still nothing. There is no photographer’s logo on the photo so I can’t even work out when it was taken from that either.

All in all a mystery baby, posting the photograph anyway in the hopes that someone may know her.

Another thought is that the name is spelt phonetically from listening to someone speaking with a foreign accent, could be something like BRIERLEY.

Frederick Richard Theobald – 1859-1903

Frederick Richard Theobald was born c1859 in England and died Aug 1903 in Westport, New Zealand. His burial record, at the Orowaiti Old Cemetery in Westport, said he was interred on 31 Aug 1902 but his death registration was in 1903. His burial record also says he was born in England and died of natural causes aged 44 yrs.

1903/5642 Theobold  Frederick Richard  44Y

I have found no record of him being born in England nor in any of the census there before he was married in NZ in 1891.

Inangahua Times, Volume I, Issue 84, 6 August 1891, Page 2
Yesterday one of those pleasant incidents which, as a rule, occur but once in a lifetime, took place in the Church of England, when Mr F. Theobald and Miss Alice Kirby were married by the Rev. Mr Wilson. Both bride and bridesmaids, sisters of the bride, wore dresses appropriate to the occasion, and needless to add the ceremony was witnessed by a congregation, mainly ladies. The bride and groom are well-known and respected residents of this district.

1891/1451 Alice Mary  Kirby  Richard Frederick  Theobald

Alice Mary is buried in the same cemetery as her husband, she died of consumption and was interred on the 14 Aug 1909 aged 40 yrs.

1909/5921 Theobold  Alice Mary  40Y

Also buried in the same cemetery is their daughter Rose Ellen Mary aged 63 spinster on the 6 Jul 1962, she was born in Reefton.

On his marriage registration he is listed as Richard Frederick and on the registrations of his childrens’ births he is listed variously as Frederick Richard or Richard Frederick.

Frederick & Alice registered the births of five children:-

1892/10838 Theobald  Frederick Edward  Alice Mary Richard Frederick
1894/13982 Theobald  Alice Eileen Louisa  Alice Mary Richard Frederick
1897/14445 Theobald  Sydney James  Alice Frederick Richard
1899/2747 Theobald  Rose Ellen Mary  Alice Mary Richard Frederick
1901/8523 Theobald  Esther Julia  Alice Mary Richard Frederick

Eleanor never married so there won’t be any descendants for her but she did have quite a few siblings and I’m sure there must be someone out there who would love to have her photograph.

Eleanor Frances was the daughter of Ralph Pickmere and Serena Hannah née Matthews, born on 29 Sep 1867 in Northland, NZ. Her father, Ralph, had arrived in NZ on board the vessel ‘Mermaid’ in 1859 from England.

John Wickham of Mere, Wiltshire – 1790-1875

        • Date: 1 April 1873
        • Photographer: Stanley, 32 Hertford St, Coventry
        • Found: UK

It took me awhile to work out what John’s surname was, at first it looked like ‘Wigham’ or ‘Wiigham’ or ‘Wugham’ or ‘Wicgham’. I had no luck finding any of those names in a census or FreeBMD or the IGI except for a few ‘Wighams’ but none of the right age. In the end I realised the G should have been a K – Wickham – and there he was!

Deaths Jun 1875
WICKHAM  John  84  Mere  5a 156

I haven’t been able to ascertain who his parents were but I did find him in the various census with his wife and two children, he probably had more who had left home by the 1841 census so it’s hard to say if any of the other Wickhams born in Mere in the various census are his or not.

John was a Gardener by trade and in 1841 he is living with wife Mary, son John and daughter Eliza in Mere.

Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece 1183; Book: 4; Civil Parish: Mere; County: Wiltshire; Enumeration District: 13; Folio: 29; Page: 2; Line: 4; GSU roll: 464201.

Son John had married Anna Perfect in 1844 and in 1861 they were living elsewhere in Mere with their seven children – Wm John, Jane, Julia, Edgar, Alick, Mary Harvey & Maria Kate. I took a stab that Mary’s middle name of Harvey was John’s mother’s maiden name & I found Mary Harvey on the IGI, she was the daughter of Bennet & Betty (née Applin) Harvey, baptised in Iwerne Minster on 21 Oct 1790, she died in 1870. I found no marriage for John Wickham to Mary Harvey on the IGI, that doesn’t mean to say there wasn’t one, just that the parish they were married at hasn’t been extracted to the IGI.

John & Mary Wickham were also living in Castle St, Mere in 1861 (indexed under Wahham) and John was still there in 1871 aged 80.

Katharine Mary Carrow – 1854-c1879

katie-carrow katie-carrow-back

        • Subject: Katharine Mary Carrow
        • Date: Unknown
        • Photographer: Elliott & Fry, Portman Square, London
        • Found: UK

Katherine Mary Carrow was baptised on 7 May 1854 in Johnston, Pembrokeshire Wales to Richard & Kate (née Castle) Carrow.

Births Jun 1854
CARROW Katharine Mary Haverford W 11a 678

Katharine Mary Carrow
Bap: 7 May 1854 Johnston, Pembroke, Wales
Parents: Richard & Kate Carrow
Batch #C081721

In 1861 & 1871 she was living at home with her parents & siblings in Pembroke. In 1875 she married Courtenay E Wellesley and they had at least two children - Edward Courtenay Cannock 1876 and Hyacinth M 1878.

Marriages Mar 1875
Carrow Katherine Mary Haverfordwest 11a 991
Wellesley Courtenay E Haverfordwest 11a 991

I was unable to find any sign of Katie & her family in any English census after she was married until I found her two children living with Katie’s sister, Alice Owen, in Cheshire in 1881. Hyacinth gave her birthplace as Colorado USA which led me to find Courtenay Wellesley living in Colorado in 1880 and in Dallas Texas in 1900. In 1880 he was listed as widowed, so Katie had died sometime before then, in 1900 he’s listed as married (no wife at home) and having migrated to the USA in 1875.

Katie’s daughter, Hyacinth, went onto marry Philip Maud in 1922 in London although I was unable to find her or her brother Edward in any English census after the 1881.

I was also unable to find a birth registration or a baptism on the IGI for Courtenay E Wellesley, I didn’t find him in any census before he was married either! I did find this little snippet when I was Googling which suggests the name Hyacinth comes from his side of the family:-

Will of Lady Charles Cavendish Bentinck; 22 May 1871 (1 item - 2 ff, paper)
Copy will of Lady Charles Cavendish Bentinck:
Devises house in Norfolk Street, Park Lane to her daughter Anne Hyacinthe Cavendish Bentinck.
Legacy of £ 3000 to her son Major-General Arthur Cavendish Bentinck.
£ 1500 to Courtenay Wellesley, £ 1000 to Jane, widow of Richard Wellesley and numerous smaller legacies (£ 200-£ 800) to her Wellesley relations (the descendants of her father), her executor (Farrer).

Trying to work out if Courtenay fitted into the English aristocracy somehow really did my head in, I gave up!

One last mystery! With the above photograph of Katie Carrow came this one, written on the back in the same handwriting:-

michael-carrow michael-carrow-back

Including the date of January 1873 written on the front. Although the photographer’s address is given as Auckland it also mentions Pembroke so that may very well have been where the photograph was taken.

The mystery is that I have been unable to find ANY mention of a Michael Carrow anywhere at all, absolutely nothing in FreeBMD, the IGI, any census in both Wales & England and even Google is no help at all!

Charles Headlam Mickman (McMahon) – 1858-1908

      • Subject: Charles Headlam Mickman
      • Date: 16 June 1881
      • Photographer: H Crane late Mr & Mrs Ward, 287 Walworth Rd.
      • Found: UK

Charlie was born 1858 in Whitby, Yorkshire, the son of James Turner McMahon and Mary Jane Headlam. On the registration of James & Mary’s marriage their surname is McMahon:-

Marriages Jun 1855
HEADLAM  Mary Jane    Whitby  9d 619
MCMAHON  James Turner     Whitby  9d 619

By the time their son Charles was born they had changed the spelling to Mickman. That is the spelling they used in all the census and further registrations.

Births Sep 1858
Mickman  Charles    Whitby  9d 361

Deaths Dec 1901
Mickman  James Turner  72  Easington  10a 273

Deaths Mar 1882
MICKMAN  Mary Jane  50  Easington  10a 223

Charlie had at least four siblings – Frederick 1860; Louise 1865; Emily Ann 1869 & Harry Headlam 1873.

Charlie married Annie Eliza Hooper in 1885, Annie was a widow with two young daughters so Hooper may not have been her maiden name.

Marriages Mar 1885
Hooper  Annie Eliza     Camberwell  1d 838
Mickman  Charles Headlam     Camberwell  1d 838

As far as I can see Charlie & Annie only had the one daughter, Alice Louisa S who was born in 1896 and married in 1919:-

Births Sep 1886
Mickman  Alice Louisa S    Camberwell  1d 932

Marriages Dec 1919
Riach  Francis  Mickman  St. Geo. H. Sq.  1a 1394

Finally, I found this little snippet on James during my Google searches:-

Hannah also married (3) James Turner Mickman, son of Thomas Mickman, on 6 Dec 1883 in St. Thomas, Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, County Durham. James was born about 1829 in Bradford, Yorkshire. He died 1st Dec 1901 in Station Street, Haswell, Easington, County Durham.

NOTE: James first marriage he was recorded as James Turner McMahon.
Master Shoemaker employing 3 men and 2 boys residing at Flowergate, Whitby in 1861 - with them was Mary Jane's brothers John Headlam a jet worker and William Headlam a Bootmaker.
In 1881 James was a Storekeeper (engine work) residing at Seaham Harbour.
An Innkeeper residing at 7 Coronation Street, Bishopwearmouth at his marriage in 1883.
In 1891 James was a Bootmaker (employer) residing at Haswell Lane, Haswell, Co. Durham. He had left his wife Hannah Jane and was living “over the brush" with Sophia, 2 children from his 1st marriage and Alice from Sophia.
Still at Haswell in 1901 with Sophia and their daughter Alice.
Master Boot and shoe maker at his death aged 72.

Could this be Lionel Leveret Ogier?

Addendum 24 May 2014:
It has now been confirmed by a family member that this is not a photo of Lionel Leveret OGIER.

lionel-leveret lionel-leveret-back

So far Lionel Leveret has beaten me! I have not been able to find anyone by that name on any birth, marriage, death or census anywhere other than the name of a character in an 1873 comedy “Old Soldiers” by Henry James Byron.

The man in the photograph does seem to be rather theatrical in his pose so perhaps he is just an actor. However, I did find mention of a Lionel Leveret Ogier but he too is rather elusive.
Dating the photograph is harder than I thought although I did find that William Smith, photographer of Leeds, was in practice in the 1880s, that doesn’t help much!

While searching for Lionel Leveret I found Lionel Leveret(t) Ogier in an online gazette here:-

The appointment of the following Officers, who have been admitted to the Indian Army on probation, is confirmed from the dates specified:-
Lionel Leverett Ogier - 22nd Nov 1918

There is only one entry for Lionel Ogier in FreeBMD:-

Owen  Dorothy G E  Ogier  Stourbridge  6c 93

And this on the Runnymede Roll of Honour Memorial, panel 71:-

Died 12 March 1942. Aged 20.
Son of Lionel Leverett Ogier and Dorothy Gwynedd Eardley Ogier of East Hanningfield, Essex.
Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. Panel 71.
Based at R.A.F. Leeming, Yorkshire, 77 Squadron, R.A.F. lost two Whitley bombers on the same mission to Emden, Germany when Michael died, in addition to which 58 Squadron, R.A.F. also lost a Whitley. Carried out by 20 Wellingtons and 20 Whitleys the raid was not a success, and bombing photographs indicated that the nearest bombs were 5 miles from the designated target. Cause of loss of Michaels aircraft Z9293 KN-D is still recorded as cause unknown, the squadrons other aircraft Z9312 KN-? is presumed to have crashed in the North Sea, from where one of the crew’s bodies was washed ashore, it too is recorded in the same category as Michaels. Whitley bomber Z9293 KN-D was originally a No.102 Squadron, Royal Air Force aircraft, prior to going on the operational strength of No. 77 Squadron, Royal Air Force.

Geraldine Feodora Hyde – 1863-1935

Geraldine Feodora was born in 1863 Hampstead, Middlesex to parents Henry Barry Hyde and Mary Ann née Bird.

Births Mar 1863
HYDE  Geraldine Feodore    Hampstead  1a 557

Because of the photo being taken in Liverpool I was unsure at first as to whether I had the right family until I found them in the 1871 census living in West Derby, Lancashire, up until then they had only been associated with Ireland and London.

Source Citation: Class: RG10; Piece: 3843; Folio: 118; Page: 4; GSU roll: 841925.

henry-hyde-1871-census

Geraldine’s younger sister, Mabel Mary, was born in Liverpool and I estimate Geraldine’s age in the photo to be about 3 or 4, that as well as M A being the initials of Geraldine’s mother makes me think I have the right family.

Henry Barry was a Banker on various levels in each census, he and two of the elder children were born in Ireland although mother Mary Ann was born in London as were the rest of the children except for the youngest Mabel Mary.

In 1883 Geraldine married Arthur Henry Barrett Brittain {Rev Canon} and from the following information I found in Wikisource it seems they had one son & one daughter. I was unable to find Arthur & Geraldine in any census after they were married until the 1911 when they were living in Towcester, Northamptonshire with their son Arthur Hyde Brittain aged 14. It looks like they might have been in India during those years.
