Abel Snook was born about 1834/5 in Radstock, Somerset, the son of James Snook and Jane née Witcomb. He is living at home aged 6 in the 1841 census:-

Abel followed in his father’s footsteps and became a miner in the coal mines. He was still living at home with his parents and older brother, James, in 1851 but by 1861 he had left home and we find him lodging in Dudley, Worcestershire, miner aged 26 and unmarried.
By 1871 he had made his way to Australia where he married Mary Ann Newcombe in Hobart, Tasmania. They had two children, George William 1873 and Charles Stansell 1875:-
