Although his occupation is listed only as ‘farmer’ in the two census before his death it seems he was still practicing as a photographer in 1897 as I found mention of him having taken the photos of various people on this website here including the Countess of Essex.

Disclaimer
I originally thought this was a photo of J G Bullingham but in the course of my research I found that Joseph was also a photographer and at some stage was in business with William Heath. I can’t make up my mind about his name on the back of the photo either, is it finely hand written or is it a stamp made from his signature? So that leaves the question as to whether this is a photo of James Gould Bullingham or just a photograph taken by him of someone unknown? I would have thought if it meant he was the photographer then it should say ‘photographer’ and not just ‘photo’.

To me it would seem odd that a photographer would simply write or stamp his name below the imprinted company name and follow it with "photo." It would seem far less odd for it to be an indication that this is a photo of J. G. Bullingham. Of course this is just my impression, and it proves nothing.
I've now found out that J G Bullingham was in business with William Heath from about 1877 so it seems more likely that this photo is of an unknown person.
